China has screened the original Star Wars movies almost 40 years after George Lucas’ films were first released.
Star Wars, which originally appeared in 1977, The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983) were all shown in Chinese cinemas on Sunday, The Guardian reports.
The first Star Wars was also shown at a Shanghai international film festival screening yesterday, June 16.
Hollywood films were on very rare occasions shown in China in the 1970s and even as late as 2002, China had only 1300 cinemas. There are now more than 10 times that number, and China is set to exceed the US in box office profits within the next five years.
