Former ER star John Stamos was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence on Friday night (June 12) and has now tweeted to thank his fans for their support.

According to an ABC News report, the 51-year-old actor was stopped on Friday night after the Beverly Hills Police Department received a number of calls regarding a possible DUI driver.

According to the Beverly Hills Police Department, police stopped a vehicle at around 7.45pm local time and identified the driver as Stamos through his statement and his California driver's licence.

The actor was then taken to a local hospital for a possible medical condition and a further investigation revealed that he was driving under the influence and was subsequently arrested.

Stamos was given a citation for the DUI and was released to the care of the hospital, with the actor set to appear in court later this year on the back of the DUI charge.

Stamos has now taken to Twitter to thank his fans for their support following the incident and thanked the Beverly Hills Police Department and Cedars Sinai Hospital for their help.

His tweet reads, "Thanks to everyone for their love & support. I'm home & well. Very appreciative of the BHPD & Cedars for their care."
