Following the shocking death in this week's Game of Thrones, Irish actor Liam Cunningham, who plays Ser Davos Seaworth, has said that the death "hurt" him on a professional and personal level. Spoilers ahead.

With Seaworth on his way to The Wall to plead with Jon Snow for munitions, pretender to the Iron Throne, Stannis Baratheon, burned his daughter Shireen alive, as a sacrifice to R'hllor, the Lord of Light.

Davos and Shireen has built a friendship throughout the series, with Shireen teaching the smuggler-turned-knight how to read.

Speaking to New York Times website Arts Beat, Cunningham called the death an "awful loss, both professionally and personally", due to his enjoyment of working with Kerry Ingram, the young actress who played Shireen.

Cunningham also pointed out that their scenes together had brought a new dimension to the show: “The scenes we had together have been described as being incredibly sweet, which is not a word that you use normally with Game of Thrones

"These sweet moments in the middle of this incredible story of legacy, power and paranoia - to have that removed is difficult. It’s tricky. I shall miss her enormously.”

The Dubliner also praised Ingram for the "beautiful honesty" she brought to the role.

Showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff recently revealed that though the death hadn't occurred in the A Song of Ice and Fire books as of yet, it is due to happen in the series' upcoming sixth book, The Winds of Winter.
