The death has taken place of free jazz pioneer, Ornette Coleman. He was 85.

The alto saxophonist and composer died in Manhattan this morning (June 11) of cardiac arrest.

Coleman was one of the major innovators of the free jazz movement, coining the term when he named his 1961 album Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation. His 1959 album The Shape of Jazz to Come is considered one of the most groundbreaking albums in the genre's history.

More recently, his live album Sound Grammar won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Music.
