The death has taken place of the world-famous big band leader James Last. He was 86.

The German-born conductor and composer passed away at his home in Florida after a "short, severe illness", his manager said.

A statement read: "Mr Last passed away yesterday [Tuesday] in Florida, peacefully and in the presence of his family.

"In him, the world loses a unique ambassador whose expressive and all-encompassing language was music."

It continued: "We bid farewell to the man, friend and visionary, who by his impressive strength and openness, his professionalism, modesty and love of life served as a role model and as an inspiration for many generations worldwide."

James Last, born Hans Last, sold more than 80 million records during his career.

His Jägerlatein is known to generations of Irish people as the theme song of RTÉ's The Sunday Game.

The track was later remixed for the show by composer Sean Walsh.
