Fans of Game of Thrones who also read the A Song of Ice and Fire novels on which it is based will have been shocked by the haunting scene in last night's episode.

Shocking enough as it may have been when pretender to the throne Stannis Baratheon burned his daughter Shireen alive as a sacrifice to R'hllor, the Lord of Light, book readers were doubly shocked as this major plot turn does not appear in the books.
It seems that showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff may have, inadvertently, revealed that the burning of Shireen is actually a spoiler for the book series' sixth book.
Speaking on an Inside the Episode special, Benioff said: "When George first told us about this, it was one of those moments when I remember looking at Dan and I was just like, 'Ugh, it's so horrible, and so good in a story sense because it all comes together.'"
Benioff had previously said last year that he "wishes there were some things we didn't have to spoil", before adding: "We're stuck between a rock and a hard place. The show must go on and that's what we're going to do."
