Netflix has acquired the distribution rights for War Machine, the military satirical comedy directed by David Michod and starring Brad Pitt.
Deadline reports that Pitt will play a military general, based on Gen. Stanley McChrystal, a man once described by former US Defense Secretary Robert Gates as "perhaps the finest warrior and leader of men in combat I ever met."
Michod also wrote the film, basing it on the nonfictional The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America's War in Afghanistan by journalist Michael Hastings. Pitt's production company, Plan B, bought the rights to the book last year.
The film is set to be Netlix's biggest investment in a film to date, with Deadline reporting a figure "in the $30 million range".
Deadline quotes Netflix chief of content acquisition Ted Sarandos as saying: “War Machine is a rip-roaring, behind-the-facade tale of modern war decision-makers, from the corridors of power to the distant regions of America’s ambitions. Brad and David are a perfect team to make this timely, compelling and entertaining film.”
