They became one of the most annoying couples on television but Monica and Chandler's relationship on Friends may never have happened at all if it wasn't for devoted fans of the show.

When the neurotic chef and the loser transponster (that's what Chandler did, right?) hooked up in London during Ross' wedding to Emily, it was meant to be a one-off fling.

However, viewers liked the idea of a Chandler and Monica relationship so much, the show's writers changed the course of the series.

Speaking a the ATX Television Festival, Friends co-creator Marta Kaufman said: "We had no idea what response that was going get,"

When Monica memorably popped up from underneath the covers in Chandler's hotel bedroom, the key moment unfolded in front of a live studio audience.

Kaufman said there was so much screaming in the studio that filming had to be stopped. Speaking of the Monica/Chandler hook-up, she said: "We thought it was going to be funny and we were going to get rid of it.

"Suddenly the audience told us they had been waiting for that and we had to rethink how we were going to keep going and change the relationship.

"But that wasn't a person - it was an entire, immediate expression of joy."

Kaufman previously revealed that Monica and Joey had initially been intended as the main couple on Friends because "they just seemed the most sexual of the characters".
