The Oscar nominated animated film Song of the Sea will make its Irish premiere, ahead of a nationwide release, at the Galway Film Fleadh on Thursday, July 9.

The film, which features the voices of Irish actors Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan and David Rawle, is based on the Irish legend of Selkies, who lived as seals in the sea and humans on land.

it is the second Oscar nominated film to come from Kilkenny studio Cartoon Saloon, after 2009's The Secret of Kells. Both were directed by Irishman Tomm Moore, who said that: "The Galway Film Fleadh is one of my favourite events in the year and we attend on a regular basis so it's very exciting to be premiering our new animated feature there this year."

Song of the Sea and its Irish language counterpart Amhrán na Mara will be released nationwide on Friday July 10.
