Helen Mirren was among the Tony Award winners at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Sunday night.

Mirren won Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her role as Britain's Queen Elizabeth II in The Audience.

It is her first Tony Award.

Dedicating the award to her husband, director Taylor Hackford, Mirren said: "What a massive, massive honour. Baby, this is for you and you know why."

She then said to the audience: "It's nothing rude, incidentally."

She added: "This is an unbelievable honour and I am so thrilled."

Alex Sharp won Best Actor for his performance in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which was also named Best Play. 

The adaptation of the Mark Haddon bestseller was the biggest winner on the night, winning five awards.

The award for Best Actor in a Musical went to Michael Cerveris for Fun Home, which was also named Best Musical.

Kelli O'Hara won Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in The King and I
