Nichelle Nichols – who played Lieutenant Uhura in the original Star Trek TV series - has suffered a minor stroke.

The 82-year-old actress was taken to hospital in Los Angeles on Wednesday night (June 3).

A statement posted on her Facebook page reads: "Last night while at her home in LA, Nichelle Nichols suffered from a mild stroke.

"She is currently undergoing testing to determine how severe the stroke was. Please keep her in your thoughts."

Nichols appeared as a main cast member in the Star Trek TV show and in six films based on the sci-fi series.

In 1968, her character famously shared the first multi-racial kiss on US TV with William Shatner's Captain Kirk.
