The funeral service of the broadcaster and journalist Derek Davis has taken place in Dublin.

Chief mourners were his wife Úna and sons Michael, Colm and Seán; his daughter-in-law Gina and grandson Mikey.

President Michael D Higgins was represented by his Aide de Camp, Lieutenant Commander Patricia Butler, and Taoiseach Enda Kenny was represented by Commandant Kieran Carey.

RTÉ was represented by Deputy Director General Kevin Bakhurst, the Managing Director of RTÉ Television, Glen Killane, and the Head of RTÉ Radio 1, Tom McGuire.

A great number of Derek Davis' former colleagues were also in attendance, including Gay Byrne, Anne Doyle, Charlie Bird, Seán Duignan and Conor Kavanagh.

Derek Davis's son Michael said he could not have wished for a greater father, better teacher or more reliable friend, and he could not be prouder to be his son.

Derek Davis's friend Conor Kavanagh described him as a cheerful and empathetic person who kept family uppermost in his mind, while another friend, Brendan Keenan, said Derek Davis didn't just make a success of everything he did: he made lifelong friends when he did it.
