Former EastEnders star Sam Strike has joined BBC One's procedural Silent Witness as a "guest lead" for the 19th series.

The BBC says Strike, who played Johnny Carter in EastEnders, will play "David Hamilton, son of Tony Hamilton (Dean Andrews) and Lydia Hamilton (Geraldine Somerville)".

David becomes the lynchpin of his family after his father is sent to prison.

Strike said of his new role: "I'm a fan of Silent Witness, so when the opportunity arose to be a part of it, I jumped at the chance.

"I really admire David Drury as a director, so to work with him is very exciting."

He added: "It's always great to play a character outside of your comfort zone, especially on a platform as successful as Silent Witness."

The Emilia Fox-starring series will return to BBC One in early 2016.
