Eighty-eight-year-old EastEnders star June Brown has spoken of her failing sight and says that she needs to carry on working because the value of her pension funds has fallen so dramatically.
In a moving monologue on BBC Radio 4's The Thought Chamber, Brown, who plays Dot Branning, said: "I see things, anyway, in my eyes now. My eyes are not very good."
She continued: "In the left one, just occasionally - it's happened twice actually, which is a lot - I've had this circle, complete small circle of light with what looks like cross-wires [cross-hairs in a rifle sight]."
"I do pray about my sight – maybe my sight will return," she added.
On the subject of fears, Brown said she continued to work because she was afraid of "being poor when I'm old".
She continued: "You might laugh at that and think 'She'll never be poor when she's old' but I've not squirrelled away lots of money.
"I've had two pensions, each that have gone down by 50%.
"And I certainly don't think you should be taxed when you're older. I don't think you should be taxed on money that's already been taxed."
She added: "And the other thing I say is, always ask 'why?'"
