Jude Law will play the fictional Pope Pius XIII in The Young Pope, a miniseries directed by Italian filmmaker, Paolo Sorrentino.
The 42-year-old actor was first attached to the project in March, and now he is officially on board to play fictional pope Lenny Belardo, the first Italian-American pope in history, according to Variety.
Sorrentino said the project will centre on "the inner struggle between the huge responsibility of the Head of the Catholic Church and the miseries of the simple man that fate (or the Holy Spirit) chose as pontiff."
The eight part series is confirmed as three way co-production between HBO, Sky and Canal + and will shoot mainly in Italy.
Production is slated for this summer and continue through early 2016.
