Eddie Redmaybe has reportedly been offered the lead role in the upcoming Harry Potter spin-off film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

According to Variety, the Oscar-winning Theory of Everything star has been approached to play Newt Scamander in the movie.

It was first reported last month that the actor was in talks for the role but wanted to read the script before committing. Sources tell the publication that he is "very happy with what he read".

Harry Potter author J.K Rowling is making her screenwriting debut on the trilogy.

She said: "Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series but an extension of the wizarding world."

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be directed by David Yates and is scheduled to be released in November 2016.
