Soloists Kim Criswell, Ben Davis, Damian Humbley and Jenna Russell join the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and its Principal Conductor John Wilson for a salute to composer Stephen Sondheim in the National Concert Hall on June 4.
The concert will feature two numbers from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum being played in their original orchestrations by Irwin Kostal and Sid Ramin for the first time since the first Broadway run in 1962 to 1964.
The orchestrations for Love, I Hear and Free were presumed lost but the original manuscripts were in an archive at Columbia University and John Wilson has prepared new performing materials from them.
"‘I want people to enjoy what I write," said Sondheim. "I’m a product of Broadway no matter how pretentious anybody thinks what I write is. I’m not writing for myself. I’m writing to entertain, to make people laugh and cry and think.’
Tickets for Sondheim at 85 cost €15‒€39.50 (concession €13.00 to €36.50). Booking: 01 417 0000, nch.ie or rte.ie/co
