Avengers director and Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon has quit Twitter over criticisms of the latest Marvel superhero blockbuster, Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Just before deleting his account, he tweeted: "Thank you to all the people who've been so kind and funny and inspiring up in here."

Age of Ultron, which received mixed reviews, has already made €630m at the global box office but some disgruntled Marvel fans have taken to Twitter to complain about the movie.

Their grievances include perceived sexism in Scarlett Johansson's character Black Widow, and the portrayal of Quicksilver, the super-fast superhero.

Actor and comedian Patton Oswalt, who starred in The King of Queens and voiced Remy in Ratatouille, attacked Whedon's critics, saying: "There’s an ugly strain of social progressives that like to attack others for not being the ‘right’ kind of progressives."
