The Groundhog Day stage musical will receive its world premiere at London's Old Vic in June 2016 ahead of a transfer to Broadway.

New Artistic Director Matthew Warchus has included the musical in the line-up for his first season and has already signed up to direct the production, which will have a script penned by the film's original writer Danny Rudin and music by Matilda composer Tim Minchin.

Speaking about the new show, Warchus told BBC News: "It needs a large audience and a large stage, and I wanted to start it in this country, so it's the perfect match."

The Groundhog Day film - widely regarded as the best comedy movie of the 1990s - was released in 1993 and starred Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, and centred on a grumpy weatherman (Murray) forced to relive the same day over and over again.

Matthew Warchus, who replaces Kevin Spacey as artistic director at the Old Vic, said: "It is really about how little time you have to become the best version of yourself. It's sophisticated, meaty stuff in a romantic comedy package."

It was recently announced that Groundhog Day will begin previews in New York City on January 23, 2017, before an official Broadway opening six weeks later.

The full line-up for Warchus's first season at the Old Vic includes a production of Henrik Ibsen's The Master Builder starring Ralph Fiennes, and a Timothy Spall-led revival of Harold Pinter's The Caretaker.
