Star Wars star Mark Hamill has said he was "suspicious" when he heard director J.J. Abrams was involved in the new space opera trilogy because the director is "a Star Trek guy".

Speaking at the Star Wars celebration fan event in California over the weekend, 63-year-old Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker in the sci-fi series, said: "I was a little suspicious because he was a Star Trek guy."

Hamill added that he likes Star Trek but said of Abrams' involvement: "It just seems odd."

The actor also told fans at the convention that he knew he had to say 'yes' when George Lucas told him of the plans to reboot Star Wars.

"It's not like a choice. It's like I was drafted," Hamill said. "Could you imagine if for some reason I'd said, 'I don't think I want to do it'? I would have all of you surrounding my house like villagers, angry villagers with lightsabers instead of torches."
