As James Bond he has a licence to kill, but as Daniel Craig he now has a licence to save, as that star has been named the first global advocate for the elimination of mines and explosives hazards by the United Nations.

The 47-year-old James Bond star will spend the next three years working to raise awareness for the UN Mine Action Service and will also be seeking financial and political support for the project.

During a meeting at the UN headquarters in New York, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told Craig: "You have been given a licence to kill [as James Bond], I'm now giving you a licence to save."

Craig replied: "I am honoured to accept this role, I'm humbled that I will get the chance to work next to people who are risking their lives every day to help ordinary people live ordinary lives. I will do my very best."

Earlier this month, the actor had to have knee surgery after he injured himself while shooting upcoming Bond film Spectre.

Spectre is due for release in Ireland on October 23 – check out the trailer below.
