Showrunner Al Jean has announced that The Simpsons will no longer be packaged for DVD.

Jean shared the news on Twitter and blamed the "collapse of [the] DVD market and rise of downloads" for the decision.

The animated comedy series will continue to be available on digital platforms.

"I personally am very sorry to see DVDs discontinued," he said. "We did them purely for the love of hearing ourselves talk. Really wish they'd continue. Not up to me."

However, Jean added that they will still record commentaries for on-demand service FX NOW in the US. "Commentaries will continue on FX NOW, which I hope will be available worldwide someday," he tweeted.
