Fans of maximum smoulder and rugged coastlines rejoice - the BBC has commissioned a second series of Poldark after the current run scored record-breaking viewing figures.

The adaptation of Winston Graham's novels, starring Dubliner Aiden Turner, is a reboot of the 1970s TV series. It tells the story of Ross Poldark, a solider who returns to his Cornish homestead after fighting for the king in the American War of Independence.

The series, currently screening on BBC One on Sunday nights, has been watched by `a consolidated viewing figure' of 8.1 million viewers.

The Guardian reports that these are the BBC's highest ratings share for the first three months of a year in a decade.

Poldark, which has been adapted by screenwriter Debbie Horsfield, will return for an eight-part run covering the third and fourth of Graham's novels.
