New Girl has been renewed for a fifth season by Fox and work on more episodes of the sitcom is already underway because of lead actress Zooey Deschanel's pregnancy.

Fox president David Madden said: "Four seasons in, New Girl continues to be one of the smartest and most relatable comedies on television.

"The writing is razor-sharp, the ensemble is consistently hilarious, and we couldn't be more proud of . . . the entire New Girl team. We absolutely love this show and we're so excited to bring it back for season five."

Season five will include a major cast change, as Damon Wayans Jr leaves his role as Coach.
