One of the Star Wars spinoffs will be called Rogue One, Disney has revealed.

The company's CEO Bob Iger announced the news in an investor call yesterday (March 12), saying that The Theory of Everything Oscar-nominated actress Felicity Jones will star in the spinoff.

Director Gareth Edward's movie will begin production this summer in London and is set to open in cinemas on December 16, 2016. Chris Weitz will pen the script for Rogue One, which is set outside the core Star Wars saga, while maintaining connections to its universe.

Meanwhile, Iger also confirmed than Rian Johnson (Looper) will both write and direct Star Wars Episode VIII, which is set to be released on May 26, 2017.

JJ Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the first film from the revived franchise and will open in cinemas on December 18.
