This World: Secrets of Mexico’s Drug Wars, 9.00pm BBC Two

The arrest of Mexican drug lord Joaquin 'el Chapo' Guzman in February 2014 was hailed as a victory in America's war on drugs, but the truth behind the capture could be just another murky chapter in the scandal-ridden history of US involvement in Latin America and the Mexican drug wars. This programme also investigates the American authorities' relationship with the biggest and most powerful criminal organisation in the world, the Sinaloa Cartel, a multi-billion dollar international corporation with `franchises' in 58 countries. Despite its leader's arrest, the cartel is still enjoying extraordinary success, and this programme examines allegations that the group has been given an easy ride in return for informing on other cartels. High-level informants, immunity deals, government-sanctioned gun trafficking and a mysterious go-between charged with carrying messages between the US Drug Enforcement Administration and the cartel: a picture emerges of a dirty war being fought with little regard to the thousands of victims of the violent conflict being fought for control of Mexico's drug-smuggling routes to America.

Cumann na mBan - Mná na Réabhlóide, 9.30pm TG4

Repeat of a new documentary first aired last Sunday night. In April 1914, Cumann na mBan, one of the most important women’s organisations in modern Irish history was formed. Moreover it was the most important women’s organisation in the revolutionary decade of 1912-1923. Between 1914 and 1923, thousands of Cumann na mBan women participated in the nationalist struggle. However, much of the work and activities of the Cumann na mBan women has been forgotten or overlooked. This documentary,  narrated by Mary McAleese, brings the contribution of nationalist women under the spotlight.

Suffragettes Forever! The Story of Women and Power, 8.00pm BBC Two

In this final episode, historian Amanda Vickery explores how the Edwardian Suffragette movement started to employ violent acts to ensure their message was heard. Vickery investigates the political trickery employed to stop women getting the vote and the increasing extremism of the Suffragettes in response. She argues that it was women’s work in the First World War that encouraged politicians to give them the vote. Vickery also finds that a political backroom deal was formed to allow only some women the vote and she also examines the abusive treatment of the first female MP, Lady Astor in the 1920s.
