Idris Elba to star in new documentary

A documentary about actor Idris Elba called Mandela, My Dad and Me is due to be released soon.

The 60-minute documentary from BAFTA-winning director Daniel Vernon follows the Luther star on a "journey of self-exploration" as he records his album mi Mandela in 2013 and deals with the death of his father.

According to Variety, it follows Elba as he went to South Africa to film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, and record the album based on his research for the role. 

The documentary was co-financed by Green Door Pictures and Bob & Co.

Nicholas Yearwood from Green Door Pictures said: "Green Door Pictures are delighted with the results of almost a year of filming.

"Daniel Vernon's film perfectly captures Idris's personal and professional challenges, whilst he tackled arguably the most iconic and important role of his career."

Mandela, My Dad and Me is premièring at London's BFI on April 7, with a cinema release to follow.
