Madonna has compared Kanye West to herself and stated that "Kanye is the new Madonna".
The 56-year-old singer, whose new album Rebel Heart features three collaborations with West, says that the pair bonded as they've both faced criticism for pushing boundaries.
"Kanye is the black Madonna," she told the New York Daily News. "We know, and recognise, that we have that in common. We're comrades in the envelope-pushing genre."
Madonna also spoke about her new album, saying: "I've been doing what I've been doing for over three decades, so in many ways I feel like a survivor. I see that many of my peers, and friends, and people I collaborated with are no longer with us.
"That gave me pause," she added. "I said, 'Wow, I can't believe I made it this far.' That was a catalyst for me."
She also said that Rebel Heart is about her "taking stock, taking ownership" of her past, as she "felt like it was time to speak of those things".
Madonna also addressed her critics who have argued that she should not be displaying her body on stage due to her age.
"Bitch, this is what my ass looks like - show me what your ass looks like when you're 56," she said. "I take care of myself. I'm in good shape.
"Who's to say when I can show my ass? It's sexism. It's ageism. And it's a kind of discrimination."
She added that she has come up against a lot of opposition, particularly from women, and that she hopes she has paved the way for a change in attitudes in future.
"People have always judged me, and given me s**t about one thing or another. Now they're giving me s**t about age," she said.
"It's bulls**t. And mostly I hear it from women. I feel I should be hearing support - like, 'Good for you'.
"It's like everything else. I'm opening doors for women behind me who one day won't have to deal with this s**t that I deal with."
Rebel Heart is released tomorrow (Monday, March 9).
