Based on true events, 80-year-old Smith plays the part of Miss Shepherd - a homeless pensioner - who spent her later years living in a yellow van.
The film centres on a play by author Alan Bennett, who offered the pensioner temporary residence on his property during the '70s and '80s.
The Lady in the Van hits cinemas on November 13.
