Principal photography has begun on the BBC's epic new production of War and Peace, which will be filmed in Russia, Latvia and Lithuania and includes Stephen Rea among its cast.

Rea will play Prince Vassily Kuragin in the six-hour BBC One adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's classic.

The series is directed by Tom Harper (The Scouting Book for Boys, Peaky Blinders, The Woman in Black: Angel of Death) and starring opposite Rea are, among others, Gillian Anderson (Anna Pavlovna), Jim Broadbent (Prince Bolkonsky), Brian Cox (General Kutuzov), Paul Dano (Pierre Bezukhov), Lily James (Natasha Rostova), James Norton (Prince Andrei Bolkonsky) and Greta Scacchi (Countess Rostov). 

The BBC previously adapted War and Peace for the screen in 1972, with Anthony Hopkins playing Pierre Bezukhov.
