The Oscars are on tonight and we are super excited! Paddy Kehoe shares his beginner's guide to host, Neil Patrick Harris.

1. An inveterate awards host who is much sought-after for his razor-sharp wit. Neil Patrick Harris has hosted the Emmy awards twice, The Tony awards four times, The World Magic Awards and The Video Game Awards.

2. He played the impish, outrageous and ultimately lovable (kind of) Barney Stinson in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother which ended in March 2014 after 200 plus episodes.

3. The actor/entertainer/dancer (phew!) played Amy’s ex, Desi Collings in Gone Girl, a tour de force of a performance, regarded by many as the best in the film.

4. He was a Golden Globe nominee at the tender age of 15 for his role in Whoopi Goldberg's film Clara’s Heart.

5. The following year he became a major star thanks to the sitcom, Doogie Howser, M.D., playing the eponymous child doctor.

6. He has over 10 million Twitter followers, which betokens great power in the social media jungle.

7. Born in 1973, he grew up in New Mexico and early on loved circuses, magicians and musicals.

8. In the spring of 2014, he donned high heels, denim hotpants and glittery lip-gloss in the first Broadway production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Written by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, the musical is based on the story of an East German singer who arrives in the US after a faulty sex change operation.

9. He came out publicly as a gay man in 2006, and married his partner, actor David Burka in January 2014. The couple met in 2004 and have twins, Harper and Gideon.

10. He turned down the chance to succeed talk show host David Letterman when Letterman retires in May.
