Coldplay frontman Chris Martin will become curator of the Global Citizen Festival from September, which aims to banish world poverty.

The musician will join Universal executive Vice-President Michele Anthony, Translation's Steve Stoute and Pearl Jam manager Kelly Curtis in planning an annual charity concert. It is intended that the concert will be held on the Great Lawn of New York's Central Park.

The aim is to raises funds toward eliminating global poverty by 2030. Martin will promote the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development goals, which include improved sanitation, and youth and adolescent rights. The objective is to assist the estimated 1.2 billion people living in extreme poverty worldwide.

Meanwhile, Coldplay’s next album, A Head Full of Dreams, will be released later in the year. A stadium tour has been provisionally arranged for summer 2016, according to Billboard.

Martin has quipped about his long-running quest to become the next Bono. "Everything I do is a Bono move - surely that's clear after 15 years. But I'm not going to start wearing shades."
