Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that he went by a different name when he began acting, choosing his middle name Carlton as a surname instead.

Express.co.uk quote the Oscar nominee as saying, "I started off as Benedict Carlton, which is my middle name, my grandfather's name.

"Cumberbatch sounds like a fart in a bath... It is even funnier in an English accent. But an agent who was wiser than me told me it was a good name. People have fun with it and they continue to."

On his status as one of Hollywood's biggest stars at the moment he commented, "I'm not interested in being the man of the moment, I want longevity. I want to direct. I have been very fortunate and I am going to try to do as much as I can."

Cumberbatch is nominated for Best Actor for his performance in The Imitation Game at this year's Academy Awards, which take place in Hollywood on Sunday, February 22.
