Florence Welch has revealed that she had a "bit of a nervous breakdown" while taking an extended break from music.

The Florence + the Machine star said that she found herself "spiralling" after she decided to take time out of the studio after her album Ceremonials in 2011.

She told BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe:  "Ceremonials and Lungs all blurred together, we didn't take any time off. It was a decision to have a year off."

However, she suffered from "a bit of a nervous breakdown" during the year-long hiatus.

Welch explained: "In the year off, I was still going out and going to events but something wasn't quite right, I was spiralling a bit. I wasn't making myself happy. I wasn't stable."
