Tributes have been paid to Visage singer Steve Strange, a key figure in the New Romantic movement, who passed away following a heart attack while on holiday in Egypt. He was 55.

The Welsh singer, born Steven John Harrington, was best known for Visage's hit Fade to Grey.

Paying tribute, Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon tweeted: "He was the leading edge of New Romantic. God Bless him."

Billy Idol wrote: "Very sad to hear of my friend Steve Strange passing, RIP mate."

Spandau Ballet said: "We are devastated at the news of the passing of our dear friend Steve Strange. Steve was a lovely, warm, generous, kind-hearted man, always full of fun. He will be sadly missed."

In a statement, Strange's friend and touring companion Kim Wilde said: "I'm so grateful that life brought Steve and I together, he was funny, great company and completely bonkers in the most adorable way."

She continued: "He would often call up for a long chat, and always asked after my husband Hal, and our children Harry and Rose. Steve was a family man first and often spoke of his beloved family in Wales.

"Steve will be remembered as the most elegant and beautiful of the New Romantics at the beginning of the 80s, and Fade to Grey was one of the very best and most influential records of the decade."

Wilde concluded: "I shall remember him for his humour and generous spirit; he really was a very lovely man."

Strange's agent, Pete Bassett, told the Press Association: "He will be remembered as a hard-working, very amusing and lovable individual who always was at the forefront of fashion trends."
