Geraldine McEwan has died at the age of 82 at Charing Cross Hospital in London.
The BAFTA-award winning actress was best known for her starring role as Agatha Christie's detective Miss Marple in the ITV drama Marple.
"Following a stroke at the end of October and a period in hospital, Geraldine McEwan passed away peacefully on January 30," read a statement from the late actress's family.
"Her family would like to thank the staff at Charing Cross Hospital who cared for her incredibly well."
McEwan was born in 1932 and made her West End debut in 1951, and she spent several seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1950's and 1960's.
McEwan played Miss Marple between 2004 and 2008 on ITV, subsequently announcing her retirement from the role after three seasons and 12 TV movies. She was succeeded by Julia McKenzie.
