Eddie Redmayne has revealed he had a "screaming tennis match" with his new wife Hannah Bagshawe when he heard about his Oscar nomination.

The 33-year-old has been nominated in the Best Actor category for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

Speaking to E! News Redmayne revealed that he was not actually with his wife – who he married a month ago – when the Academy Award nominations were announced on Thursday (January 17). He was in an L.A. hotel room while Bagshawe was back home in London at work.

However she was the first person he called as Redmayne explains: "It was sort of a screaming tennis match, as it were.

"I don't think there were any words until she was like, 'I have to go do my accounts. But I'm too excited to work.'"

Redmayne picked up a Golden Globe on Sunday for his work as legendary physicist Stephen Hawking.
