Pete Doherty has said The Libertines may record some old songs properly for their upcoming third studio album saying they "threw so many away" back in the day.

The frontman told NME, "We always had the tunes but we threw so many away. Some sneaked out as internet giveaways or they weren't recorded properly.

"So this is a chance for us to make a record rather than somebody just stapling loads of bits together."

When asked if he feels the band's new material will live up to their first two albums he said, "I can't say that I've been able to listen properly to what we did, because some part of me doesn't want to engage with it.

"But whilst I've been clean I've tried to listen to some of it. If we can pick up from where we left off 10 years ago, f*** what anyone else thinks."

The Libertines released their debut album Up The Bracket in 2002. A self-titled record following in 2004 before the band eventually split later that year.

It was announced in December, following a number of reunion shows in 2014, that they would release a new album.
