The annual Nationwide Walking Events will take place on Saturday January 17 next. Over 13,000 people took part in the national walks in 2014, as part of Operation Transformation. The walks take place in association with the Irish Sports Council.

Meanwhile, the first two leaders, Louise and Mark braved their first weigh-ins this morning on RTÉ Radio 1's The John Murray Show.

How had the week been for Louise? “The cigarettes went, the Diet Coke went, the bad habits went,“ she told the programme and even managed to find the food "lovely”.  When she felt the cravings for a cigarette, she explained that she opted instead for a bottle of water. Next came the weigh in. Last week, Louise's weight was 13st 12.5lbs - due to her sterling efforts, she had lost an impressive 5.5llbs in her admirable first week. She now weighs 13st 7llb.

“It feels amazing,” said Louise. “I was quietly confident, but to be told as well, knowing I couldn’t go out for a cigarette, I had to do other things and keep myself busy all the time."

Mark was also weighed in this morning’s programme. The week had been “hectic”, but had also been “a really, really fun week” he told Kathryn Thomas, who was surprised about the fun bit. “I wanted to be the best pupil in the class, so I did what was told,” said Mark. Mark lost a whopping 9.5llbs from last week's 21stone 11.5llbs.

He had been out running and training with his son. “There’s hope for a mid-field partnership there yet," he quipped.
