Gorgeous George and the equally gorgeous Amal are planning a visit to Ireland
Gorgeous George and the equally gorgeous Amal are planning a visit to Ireland

From Father Ted: The Musical to George and Amal's planned trip to the old ancestral home - here's what made the entertainment headlines here on TEN this week. Have a look back on seven days in the business of show.

George and Amal to holiday in Ireland

It looks like George Clooney and his wife, human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin, will visit his ancestral home of Ireland for the first time this summer.

The Irish Independent reported that Clooney has been planning the trip for some time. "I'm embarrassed that I've never properly been there before now," the 53-year-old actor said.

"I've been talking about going there for years and Bono has been trying to get me to do a bike ride around Ireland with him.

"He probably won't be up for that now, but I'm definitely going to make a visit happen this summer. Amal has been several times, so she can show me around."

Clooney has Irish roots on both sides of the family. His father's great-great-grandfather Nicholas Clooney came from Co Kilkenny. His paternal grandmother's maiden name was Guilfoyle.

Stephen Fry to marry

Stephen Fry has confirmed that he and partner Elliott Spencer are getting married.

The 57-year-old comedian and writer took to Twitter to confirm the happy news, writing, “Oh. It looks as though a certain cat is out of a certain bag. I’m very very happy of course but had hoped for a private wedding. Fat chance!”

He later posted, “Thank you all SO much for your kind congratulations. Deeply touched xxx”.

So who is this Elliot bloke? Well, The Daily Mail reported that he is 27 and a self-proclaimed comedian and sometime writer. Apparently he met Stephen last year and they started dating. Elliot is a huge music fan with a particular fondness for The Cure and Morrissey in particular.

Yup, we like this guy. And what about that age difference? 30 years! As the great Alan Partridge once said, back of the net!

Over 700,000 people watch opening episode of Charlie

724,000 viewers watched the opening episode of Charlie, RTÉ's new three-part dramatisation of the political career of former Taoiseach Charles J Haughey last Sunday night.

An additional 21,000 watched the drama on RTÉ One+1.

Starring Aidan Gillen in the lead role and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as spin doctor PJ Mara, the opening instalment covered Haughey's tooth-and-nail battle for power, his fraught negotiations with British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher over Northern Ireland, and the fall of his first government in 1981.

Father Ted - The Musical!

It's the news that just might rocket you out of those New Year blues - Graham Linehan has said that a musical of Father Ted could be on the cards and it would probably have to include "spinning cardinals".

Linehan, who created the much-loved clerical sitcom with Arthur Matthews, said he would never bring the show back to TV and that the only realistic way to revive Fathers Ted, Dougal and Jack would be as a stage musical.

"I would never bring back the TV show, because of the risk you poison people’s memories of the original," he told The Radio Times.

"But if you were to come up with a completely new format, I think it would be worth doing. I have this vision of a dance number, with spinning cardinals."

Linehan, who has previously adapted Ealing comedy The Ladykillers for the stage, says any new Ted would need to have a modern comedy edge to reflect how times have changed since the TV series ended in 1998.

Nicole KIdman tells Jimmy Fallon he blew his chances of a date

If you missed the moment earlier this week when Nicole Kidman told gobsmacked chat show host Jimmy Fallon that he messed up the chance to date her, you can watch it here. There's hope for us all!

David Cameron did a spot of "dad dancing" at Alex James' NYE party

British Prime Minister David Cameron is reported to have attended a New Year's party thrown by Blur bassist Alex James at his country house (geddit?!) where he sipped wine and engaged in a spot of "dad dancing".

The Sun newspaper reported that Cameron and his wife, Samantha, were invited to the bash and claims that fellow guests said that James tried to persuade Cameron to sing karaoke.

"David and Samantha looked to be having a fun time," said a source. "Although his security was with him to make sure none of the 200 guests got any pictures, it was definitely an off-duty night for the PM.

"He seemed to be sipping on red wine throughout the night, although [he] wasn't drunk - which makes his dad dancing even less excusable."

The source added: "Alex kept trying to get him to sing karaoke and looked like he was almost persuaded. But that was probably the point he realised it was time to go home. Samantha was a great laugh and dancing around. It looked like she was playing a leg as a guitar as one point."

Russell Crowes weights into Hollywood ageism debate

Russell Crowe weighed in on the Hollywood ageism debate, saying that older actresses shouldn't complain about not being able to get good roles.

Russ said that actresses who complain about the lack of substantial roles still want to "play the ingénue" and instead should be "willing to live in their own skin".

Crow told Australian Women's Weekly: "To be honest, I think you'll find that the woman who is saying that [the roles have dried up] is the woman who at 40, 45, 48, still wants to play the ingénue, and can't understand why she's not being cast as the 21-year-old.

"Meryl Streep will give you 10,000 examples and arguments as to why that's bulls***, so will Helen Mirren, or whoever it happens to be.

"If you are willing to live in your own skin, you can work as an actor. If you are trying to pretend that you're still the young buck when you're my age, it just doesn't work."

He added: "The best thing about the industry I'm in - movies - is that there are roles for people in all different stages of life."

Crowe can next be seen in his directorial debut The Water Diviner.

Details of Lego 2 movie revealed

Phil Lord and Chris Miller - who directed the first Lego Movie - revealed details for the sequel.

"We were really interested in what happens to that boy who's in the meta story in the first movie when he's four years older," Miller told Empire. "When he's an adolescent, how does that change his point of view?

"And it's nice to have the characters start in a different place from the first movie. Emmet, for example, was in an existential crisis of having seen another dimension and was questioning the whole point of his existence."

The pair are writing the Lego Movie sequel's script, but do not expect to direct the film.

Lord said that he is happy to have other filmmakers take on the role of helming the movie and take it in directions they might not have considered.

"I think it would get boring if we directed them all, quite honestly," he said.

Lord and Miller are also producing The Lego Batman Movie, with Chris McKay directing and Seth Grahame-Smith writing.

The Lego Movie 2 will be released in 2018.
