Singer and former music journalist Marilyn Manson insists he coined the term 'grunge'.
Manson, real name Brian Warner, claims that he first used the term in his review of Nirvana's debut album Bleach in 1989.
In an interview with music website Noisey, the 46-year-old said, "Nirvana was different. I hated rock n' roll when I started. That was one of the bands I covered first as a journalist and I'm just going to go ahead and say I coined the term 'grunge' in a review of Bleach. You're welcome."
Manson will release his ninth album The Pale Emperor, on January 19.
