Billy Corgan warns of "the menace" facing music

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has come out fighting again about the mythology of the nineties rock scene, EDM, and "the menace" that is facing modern music.

Speaking to The Guardian, the combative singer has said that "the mythology of the Nineties is now irrelevant" and dismissed the that new bands are influenced by the era.

"I don't hear that. The mythology [of the Nineties] right now is irrelevant to combat the menace in America right now."

Smashing Pumpkins have just released their ninth album Monuments to An Elegy, which is attracting some of their best reviews in years.

Corgan also said that the popularity of highly-paid DJs is a reflection of the state of modern music. "People can get rosy and sentimental about something, but if it can’t compete it doesn’t mean anything.

"Meanwhile, EDM is kicking everybody's f***ing ass. Look at the numbers the DJs are making! They're kicking rock bands' ass. And we're sitting here talking about an era from 20 years ago because it's misty in people's minds. Meanwhile, there's 60,000 people in a field watching a guy with lights behind him."

Earlier this month, Corgan took some well-aimed swipes at grunge relics Pearl Jam and MOR rockers Foo Figthers, calling them "derivative" and "undeveloped".

Here's some earlier, better Pumpkins.
