Colm Tóibín is among the 80 nominees for the Folio Prize 2015 for his novel Nora Webster.

Open to all English-language fiction, the Folio Prize nominees also include Americans Lorrie Moore, Jane Smiley and Dave Eggers; Australian authors Peter Carey, Tim Winton and Richard Flanagan; and Britain's Ali Smith, Will Self, David Mitchell and Sarah Waters.

Canadian author Margaret Atwood is nominated for her short story collection Stone Mattress, while Pakistan-born Kamila Shamsie is on the list for A God in Every Stone, her story of a Pashtun soldier in World War I.

The Folio Prize sets out to "to identify works of fiction in which the story being told and the subjects being explored achieve their most perfect and thrilling expression".

William Fiennes is the chair of the judging panel, and he described the list of nominations as "both daunting and exhilarating".

Fiennes and his fellow judges, the writers Rachel Cooke, Mohsin Hamid, AM Homes and Deborah Levy, will select a shortlist of eight titles, to be announced on February 9.

The winner will be announced on March 23. George Saunders won this year's prize for his collection of short stories, Tenth of December.
