The Duke of Cambridge has said he is looking forward to the Downton Abbey Christmas special – after the Duchess of Cambridge urged him to watch it.

The young royals will be spending their first Christmas in their new home, Anmer Hall on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

The Duke revealed the couple’s viewing habits to Gareth Neame, the executive producer of Downton Abbey, at a reception in New York earlier this week.

“He said that he was really looking forward to the episode that we run on Christmas Day, which is the season finale," Mr Neame told Vanity Fair magazine. “So we know that William and Kate are fans.”

The Middleton family are friends of the programme’s historical adviser, Alastair Bruce, and live just 14 miles from Highclere Castle, where the series is filmed.

They are expected to join the Duke and Duchess and Prince George at Anmer Hall on St Stephen’s Day.

The couple and their son are expected to spend Christmas Day with Queen Elizabeth and other members of the Royal family at Sandringham, as they did last year.
