CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, 10.30pm RTÉ 2

Tonight’s episode is inspired by the advanced technological work of Irish Cyber Psychologist Mary Aiken. Special Agent Avery Ryan (Patricia Arquette) heads the Cyber Crime Division of the FBI, a unit at the forefront of solving illegal activities that start in the mind, live online, and play out in the real world. She also knows first hand how today’s technology allows people to hide in the shadows of the Internet and commit serious crimes of global proportion. While other agents search for criminals in dark homes and alleys, Ryan searches the “dark net,” a place deep in the bowels of the Web where criminals are anonymous, money is untraceable and where everything is for sale. Emmy Award winner Patricia Arquette will return to the role of cyber investigator Avery Ryan in CSI: CYBER in the New Year. The Seventh Seal, 8.00pm Sky Arts 1

This 1957 film gets a welcome screening, a work of genius written and directed by the late Ingmar Bergman (pictured below). Set in Sweden during the Black Death, it tells of the journey of a medieval knight (Max von Sydow) and a game of chess he plays with the personification of Death (Bengt Ekerot), who has come to take his life. The title refers to a passage from the Book of Revelation, used both at the very start of the film, and again towards the end, beginning with the words "And when the Lamb had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour. The so-called "silence of God" is a major theme of the film, which is considered a classic of modern cinema.
