Christmas officially begins tonight with The Late Late Toy Show

Get your goodies at the ready The Late Late Toy Show is on tonight and host Ryan Tubridy tells RTÉ TEN that it is going to be "loud, big, colourful, musical, messy and most of all fun".

Yes folks, it's almost time for the most magical show on TV, The Late Late Toy Show and this year is promises to be Truly Scumptious with its Chitty Chitty Bang Bang theme. Speaking to RTÉ TEN, host Ryan Tubridy said this musical is "something that is very close to his heart".

Tubridy, who will wear not one, but four different hand-knitted Christmas jumpers throughout the show, revealed that there will be more kids than ever - 269 to be exact - taking part in this year's show. "The performances from the kids are huge. What we did this year was rather than say sorry to some kids, we put loads of them together so that more kids than ever before have a chance to be on.

"The exciting news is that the kids are doing numbers that everyone will know some modern, some classical, some Christmas and then some from the movies – and I bet you can guess which movie it is from…

"It's going to be loud, big, colourful, musical, messy and most of all fun. I hope to deliver a show you will enjoy and remember and I hope the children of Ireland will watch it over and over again so that the parents of Ireland with have the will have the words Chitty Chitty in their heads like a virus!"

This year's toy count has reached new levels too with 200 toys featuring in the show and over 300 toys used for set design. The set was designed by Darragh Treacy, the award-winning RTÉ set-designer, and was over six weeks in the planning, though the production team has been researching this year’s Toy Show since earlier this year.

As with last year, a number of charities were offered the opportunity to nominate children to come in and experience the wonders of The Late Late Toy Show set. The Heart Children Ireland, Laura Lynn Ireland’s Children’s Hospice, Temple Street Children’s Hospital, Central Remedial Clinic and National Rehabilitation Hospital set visits will be screened during the show.
