ITV has ordered 10 episodes of Jekyll & Hyde, a new action-adventure series inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story and written and executive produced by Charlie Higson (The Fast Show, The Enemy books).

ITV says Higson's brief for the series is to "exude mystery, fantasy, horror and sci-fi".

The new series is set in the 1930s and will focus on Robert Jekyll, "the grandson of the original doctor".

ITV says: "At the heart of the drama is Robert Jekyll's quest to discover his real identity, his true family history and the nature of his 'curse'. One actor will play the lead role Jekyll, transforming into Hyde in moments of extreme anger, stress and when his or the lives of others are threatened."

The series will be directed by Colin Teague (Being Human, The Town, Sinbad) and production is due to start in India in January 2015, with filming taking place in London from February to July 2015.

Higson said: "It's an exciting challenge to take Stevenson's work and use it as the basis for a new Jekyll & Hyde."

He added: "So many superheroes with secret dual personalities have been brought to life thanks to Jekyll & Hyde. He's one of literatures most important and influential characters and it's a privilege to be rediscovering him."
