Dianne Houston has signed on to adapt Rebecca Walker's memoir, Ade: A Love Story for the big screen.
Madonna will direct the romantic drama, while Bruce Cohen (Silver Linings Playbook) is attached to produce.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "The film focuses on a 19-year-old American student raised in a Christian and Jewish home who travels to Africa and falls in love with a young Muslim man on an island off the coast of Kenya.
"Their hastily made plans to marry, however, get blown away by cultural and political forces."
Madonna's last directorial project WE centred on the romance between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson.
She also directed the 2008 comedy Filth and Wisdom.
