Luther is to be remade for US television by the Fox network.

The BBC cop thriller starring Idris Elba is to be reshaped for American audiences, with the project receiving a 'put pilot' commitment.

This means that Fox will pay a significant penalty if it does not air the new Luther pilot, which increases its chance of being picked up to series.

Idris Elba will be the executive producer of the remake, but is not expected to reprise the lead role. He previously featured in US cult drama The Wire.

In the original series, created by Neil Cross, Ilba starred as tortured cop John Luther and it ran for three seasons on BBC One between 2010 and 2013.

A film spin-off was previously said to be in the works, though Elba has recently voiced his desire for the show to return to television for a one-off finale.

It was previously announced that Luther would be remade for Russian television.
