Rumer has said that she supports Taylor Swift's decision to withdraw her entire back catalogue from streaming site Spotify and has called for musicians to fight for their livelihoods.

Speaking to RTÉ TEN, the singer, who has just released her new album Into Colour, said, "Spotify said that Taylor Swift obviously doesn’t want to become part of the new generation of music and the way it’s going to be and I thought, well hang on a minute!

"Spotify say they put 70% of music into a pot for artists but where does it go? I think Taylor Swift is right to pull her stuff from Spotify because it means people will buy her records if they can’t get them online.”

Rumer has also written a call to arms for musicians with a song called Play Your Guitar.

“That song is the most important song for me on the album. We can’t give up because we can’t let our culture become homogenised by the money people who have no soul," she says.

"Let’s not let the world become dead behind the eyes because of money and greed and all that crap and vanity and celebrity s***. We have to keep artistry alive and that means we have to encourage each other as much as we can in the musical community to help.”

Rumer has set up Night Owl, her own record label to develop new projects. “I’m working on a couple of things right now and I’m going to put them out because I really want to contribute a bit more," she says.

"We’re seeing a real decline in people’s engagement with music and it’s scary. Musicians are struggling for survival, they’re struggling to do their work, they’re struggling to live, struggling to pay the bills . . . they’re struggling and they’re not getting any support.”
